Welcome to Education Design Showcase

School districts, colleges and universities across the country strive to provide for students' needs - needs that are complicated by shifts in enrollment, developments in technology, ever-changing methods of instruction, community-use issues and aging school buildings.

As state governments continue to struggle with budget issues, the availability of funding for all types of educational facilities is often limited, requiring schools to make the most of every construction dollar spent. The growing awareness of environmental concerns has fostered a greater interest in "green" or sustainable school design, and the fact that schools and communities taking greater advantage of opportunities to share space, is making it necessary for those who plan, design and build these facilities to be more flexible and creative in their designs.

Higher education is also faced with issues like increased competition from for-profit institutions, student housing shortages and the need for their facilities to be part of the strategy used to recruit and retain students.

Schools, colleges and universities are being constructed at record pace in response to both a growing student population and the need to accommodate changes to the educational program. Building more flexible facilities is not enough -- we must also build better facilities.

Good designs don't just happen; they are based on research and best practice. To help fill that need for information on what makes a "good" school, School Planning & Management and College Planning & Management have established the Education Design Showcase. It is designed to be a vehicle for sharing innovative, yet practical, solutions in planning, design and construction. The goal: to share ideas that will help us achieve the best possible learning environments for all students at all levels of education.

History of Martin Luther King Day

On November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill making Martin Luther King Day a federal holiday as of January 20, 1986. As a result of this bill, Americans commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday on the third Monday in January. Few Americans are aware of the history of Martin Luther King Day and the long battle to convince Congress to establish this holiday in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

John Conyers and MLK Day

Congressman John Conyers, an African-American Democrat from Michigan, spearheaded the movement to establish a MLK day. Representative Conyers worked in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and was elected to Congress in 1964, where he championed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Four days after King's assassination in 1968, Conyers introduced a bill that would make January 15 a federal holiday in King's honor. But Congress was unmoved by Conyers' entreaties, and though he kept reviving the bill, it kept failing in Congress.

In 1970, Conyers convinced New York's governor and New York City's mayor to commemorate King's birthday, a move that the city of St. Louis emulated in 1971. Other localities followed, but it was not until the 1980s that Congress acted on Conyers' bill. By this time, the congressman had enlisted the help of popular singer Stevie Wonder, who released the song "Happy Birthday" for King in 1981, and Conyers had organized marches in support of the holiday-in 1982 and 1983, respectively.

Congressional Battles over MLK Day

Conyers was finally successful when he reintroduced the bill in 1983. But even in 1983 support was not unanimous. In the House of Representatives, William Dannemeyer, a Republican from California, led the opposition to the bill, arguing that it was too expensive to create a federal holiday and estimating that it would cost the federal government $225 million annually in lost productivity. Reagan's administration concurred with Dannemeyer's arguments, but the House passed the bill with a vote of 338 for and 90 against.

When the bill reached the Senate, the arguments opposing the bill were less grounded in economics and more reliant on outright racism. Senator Jesse Helms, a Democrat from North Carolina, held a filibuster against the bill and demanded the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) make public its files on King, asserting that King was a Communist who did not deserve the honor of a holiday. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had investigated King throughout the late 1950s and 1960s at the behest of its chief, J. Edgar Hoover, and had even tried intimidation tactics against King, sending the civil rights leader a note in 1965 that suggested he kill himself to avoid embarrassing personal revelations hitting the media.

King, of course, was not a Communist and had broken no federal laws, but by challenging the status quo, King and the Civil Rights Movement discomfited the Washington establishment. Charges of Communism were a popular way to discredit people who dared speak truth to power during the 50s and 60s, and King's opponents made liberal use of that tactic.

When Helms tried to revive that tactic, Reagan defended him. A reporter asked Reagan about the charge of Communist against King, and Reagan said that Americans would find out in around 35 years, referring to the length of time before any material the FBI gathers on a subject could be released. Reagan later apologized, and a federal judge blocked the release of King's FBI files.

Conservatives in the Senate tried to change the name of the bill to "National Civil Rights Day" as well, but they failed to do so. The bill passed the Senate with a vote of 78 for and 22 against. Reagan capitulated, signing the bill into law.

The First MLK Day

King's wife, Coretta Scott King, chaired the commission responsible for creating the first celebration of King's birthday in 1986. Though she was disappointed at not receiving more support from Reagan's administration, the result was over a week of commemorations beginning on January 11, 1986, and lasting until the holiday itself on January 20. Events were held in cities like Atlanta and Washington, D.C., and included a tribute at the Georgia State Capitol and the dedication of a bust of Dr. King at the U.S. Capitol.

Some Southern states protested the new holiday by including Confederate commemorations on the same day, but by the 1990s the holiday had become established everywhere in the United States.

Reagan's proclamation of the holiday on January 18, 1986, explained the reason for the holiday: "This year marks the first observance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a national holiday. It is a time for rejoicing and reflecting. We rejoice because, in his short life, Dr. King, by his preaching, his example, and his leadership, helped to move us closer to the ideals on which America was founded. . . . He challenged us to make real the promise of America as a land of freedom, equality, opportunity, and brotherhood."

It required a long 15-year fight, but Conyers and his supporters successfully won King national recognition for his service to country and humanity.

Graduate Vacancies - How Selective Should I Be?

Are you a candidate for a vacancy that is out of work, perhaps your a graduate seeking their first job or your a more experienced person who has lost their job and is now looking for a new roles?

There are two different ways that people approach this situation, the first is to take a highly selective stance insisting that a chosen vacancy meets a strict criteria and nothing else. The other approach is the complete opposite, to apply for anything that you can!

In my opinion, there are merits to both approaches, however many recruiters believe that a major factor that many candidates fail to realize is the impact of being perceived as being 'on the shelf' for any period of time.

You may not think this is correct, but it within a humans nature to believe if something that has been available for a while (a house or car for example) and has not been snapped up, then there's something wrong with it! A candidate who has been out of employment for a while could also fall under this banner.

For example in the pharmaceuticals sector, it is not unknown for entire sales teams of up to around 60 people made redundant in one go. Recruiters would expect the top performers to find placements within a few weeks. After a month or so, a few of the good members of the team could be left over , but by month three, the ones that were unable to gain employment would be considered weaker members of their former team.

With this in mind, you should be aware of what vacancies that you apply for, if you have recently graduated, or are out of work. If your fresh out of University, you may want to walk straight into your dream job, or perhaps just to relax for a while.

However you should be aware that the longer your unemployed, the more your chances of securing that vacancy may be affected.

There are exceptions or valid excuses that are considered to be ok, such as a house renovating project, or traveling. However my advice is to gain some form of employment within a short timespan, it doesn't need to be your first choice, or ideal job, but try and get something with "some" relevancy towards your ideal role.

As an example, if you are pursuing a career in medical sales, taking a tele-sales role whilst looking for a medical sales role isn't a bad option. Your experience in a similar field will put you ahead of somebody who has been unemployed for the past few months when applying!

In summary, if you want to be picky about the sort of graduate vacancies you will apply to, my advice would be to get 'a' job whilst you are looking. The more relevant your temporary job is to the one you would really like, the greater your chances of success.

Career Advice For 6th Form Students

Deciding to take A Levels, and deciding which A levels to take, can be an exciting, involved and sometimes challenging process. While you are looking into possible university courses and considering the pre-requisites required, it is the perfect time to think about the types of jobs that you would be happy doing.

Many Different Jobs

In previous eras, people tended to stick with one job for a very, very long time. While this may be still true today, there is a greater tendency for people to change careers and move from industry to industry. Although it is important to have clearly defined career goals, you should try not to limit yourself. When deciding on which subjects to choose, think carefully about the types of jobs you may be interested in, and consider the skills and abilities that you may require. A bit of research is vitally important, so that you can make sure that you are heading in the right direction.

Money Is Not Everything

Some people spend many, many years working in jobs they dislike because they choose their career path based on money and potential earnings. While financial stability is important for everyone, it should not be the only thing that you think of when choosing a job. Where do your interests lie? What are you good at? What are you passionate about? These are important questions that you should ask yourself before embarking on further study and training.

Experience Counts

Keep in mind that employers care about experience and value it very highly. While you are studying for A levels, make sure that you get as much work experience as possible. Similarly, when you are at university or college, try to ensure that you engage with volunteer work opportunities, work experience programmes and projects.

Make the World A Better Place

Many people find that they are happy if they make the decision to work for socially and ethically responsible companies and organisations. If you can't find a company that you like, create your own business. A job that you love, and are good at, will give you a sense of purpose and achievement and enrich your life.

During this age, boys and girls used to be enthusiastic, adventurous, optimists and inspired at the same time impatient and excited. One needs proper guidance to save oneself and to develop enough self restraint to maintain routine and disciplined life .
* Parents should be empathetic, benevolent and sensible to understand the age, the chemical changes that happens with adolescent age.

Oliver P. Richmond
Routledge, 2008 - 218pages

This book examines the way in which peace is conceptualized in IR theory, a topic which has until now been largely overlooked. The volume explores the way peace has been implicitly conceptualized within the different strands of IR theory, and in the policy world as exemplified through practices in the peacebuilding efforts since the end of the Cold War. Issues addressed include the problem of how peace efforts become sustainable rather than merely inscribed in international and state-level diplomatic and military frameworks. The book also explores themes relating to culture, development, agency and structure. It explores in particular the current mantras associated with the 'liberal peace', which appears to have become a foundational assumption of much of mainstream IR and the policy world.

Analyzing war has often led to the dominance of violence as a basic assumption in, and response to, the problems of international relations. This book aims to redress the balance by arguing that IR now in fact offers a rich basis for the study of peace.

International Relation, Political Theory and the Problem of Order: Beyond International Relations Theory?

Nicholas J. Rengger
Routledge, 2000 - 232 pages

At the turn of the millennium, and now after the fall of the Berlin wall, the best way to map the trajectories of contemporary international relations is hotly contested. Is the world more or less ordered than during the cold war? Are we on the way to a neo-liberal era of free markets and global governance, or in danger of collapsing into a new Middle Ages? Are we on the verge of a new world order or are we slipping back into an old one?

These issues are amongst those that have dominated International Relations Theory in the late 1980s and 1990s, but they have their roots in older questions both about the appropriate ways to study international relations and about the general frameworks and normative assumptions generated by various different methodological approaches. This book seeks to offer a general interpretation and critique of both methodolgical and substantive aspects of International theory, and in particular to argue that International Relations theory has seperated itself from the concerns of political theory more generally at considerable cost to each.

Focussing intially on the 'problem of order' in international politics, the book suggests that International Relations theory in the twentieth century had adopted two broad families of approaches, the first of which seeks to find ways of 'managing' order in international relations and the second of which seeks to 'end' the problem of order. It traces three specific sets of responses to the problem of order within the first approach, which emphasize 'balance', 'society' and 'institutions' and outlines two responses within the second grouping, an emphasis on emancipation and an emphasis on limits.

Finally, the book assesses the state of International Relations theory today and suggests an alternative way of reading the problem of order which generates a different trajectory for theory in the twenty first century.
